If a child has hypoglycemia in the first days of life, he may have any kind of neurological problems including seizures and impaired mental development.


 When the amount of glucose in the human body drops below a certain level, it is called hypoglycemia.  Older people and diabetics are familiar with this disease.  Newborns can also develop hypoglycemia.  If the blood glucose level in the newborn drops below 48 mg (2.6 mmol / liter) per 100 ml, it is called hypoglycemia.



Glucose is the immediate source of energy for our body.  Glucose is essential for the proper functioning of vital organs, especially the brain.  If a child has hypoglycemia in the first days of life, he may have any kind of neurological problems including seizures and impaired mental development.



Newborns who are at risk of hypoglycemia


 The mother of the child had diabetes during pregnancy and it was out of control.


 Those who are born with low weight.


 Those who were born prematurely.


 If the baby's body temperature drops for any reason.


 If breastfeeding is stopped at an early stage due to any illness.


 If the newborn is infected with bacteria or viruses.


 If the newborn has shortness of breath or is deficient in oxygen for any reason.


Even if the newborn has some hormonal deficiency or birth defects in his body, he may suffer from hypoglycemia.


Symptoms


 The endless crying of a newborn or baby


 Hands and feet tremble


 Baby fatigue, drowsiness, inability to drink milk, low vitality


 Sweating a lot, body getting wet, hands and feet getting cold


 Convulsions all over the body or on one side, hands-feet-face or anywhere


 Staring without blinking, eye rolling, body turning blue


 Shortness of breath, frequent or abnormal breathing


 The body becomes pale.



Things to do


 The child should be taken to the hospital if any of the above symptoms appear.  Glucose levels can be easily measured with a drop of blood glucometer at the baby's ankle.  If the glucose is less than 2.6 millimoles per liter, it is necessary to make arrangements to give glucose quickly.
