The United States and several European countries have recorded the highest number of COVID-19 infections in a single day since the onset of the coronavirus epidemic.

Concerned about the continued spread of Omicron variants around the world, health officials said Monday they had received information that 440,000 new infections had been identified in the United States. France, Italy, Greece, Portugal and England also saw record numbers of new infections on Monday.

Officials, however, said that due to the Christmas holidays, reports of the Covid infection were delayed, possibly due to a record number of new infections arriving on Monday.

Various studies, however, suggest that Omicron is much weaker than its predecessor, the Delta variant.  But even then, there are fears that at the rate at which antimicrobial infections are occurring, hospitals could be overwhelmed by patient pressure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that Omicron is still a serious risk.

This is the highest number of deaths in a single day in the country in the fourth wave of Covid.  More than three-quarters of those who died did not receive the vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States says the number of people identified in Covid on December 26 has risen to 4,41,026.

According to a CDC statistical analysis, the average number of people caught covid every day in the last seven days is unprecedented since January this year, according to US media reports.

But a CDC spokesman said the latest number of infections was estimated to be higher than the actual number of infections, as many test centers were closed during Christmas. And a lot of information is arriving late because of the holidays. This number may stabilize in the new year.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a report on Tuesday stating that infections in all variants of Covid increased by 56 percent in Europe and 30 percent in the United States in the week before December 26.
